Postponement of presentation of renewed agenda between EU and Latin American and Caribbean countries

The European Commission is expected to postpone the presentation of its communication on a new agenda for cooperation between the European Union and Latin America and the Caribbean until Wednesday 7 June.

This postponement will allow this renewed agenda to better coincide with the trip that the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, is due to make to the region from Sunday 11 June, according to our information. By then, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, will have visited Cuba.

On Monday 15 May, the Ambassadors of the Member States to the EU (Coreper) briefly continued their discussions in the Council of the EU on the position Europe will take in negotiations with their Latin American and Caribbean partners on the drafting of a joint declaration to be adopted at the EU/CELAC summit on 17-18 July in Brussels. Two issues caused difficulties last week: the language on trade agreements, including the one with Mercosur countries, and the reference to Russian military aggression of Ukraine (see EUROPE 13180/23). Coreper will resume these discussions on Tuesday.

It should be noted that on her arrival at the Eurogroup, the Spanish Finance Minister, Nadia Calviño, announced that an informal meeting of European, Latin American and Caribbean finance ministers would be held on 15 and 16 September in Santiago de Compostela.
