15/05/2023 (Agence Europe) – At the Education, Youth, Culture and Sport Council (EYCS) on Monday 15 May, EU Sport Ministers approved revised rules on the representation of Member States in the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) (see EUROPE 13171/30). They also appointed Poland as the “government expert” representing the EU at WADA. At the meeting, they also discussed respect for human rights in sport. While there were significant differences of opinion on the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in sports competitions (see other news), all agreed that EU countries should promote a framework that ensures good governance of sports federations, while respecting their autonomy. They also called for more transparency in the organisation of sports events - right from the selection of host countries - and for inclusive and non-discriminatory sports environments. (HS)
