12/04/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 12 April, the Belgian justice system ordered the release from prison and the house arrest with electronic tag of the deposed vice-president of the European Parliament, Eva Kaili. She is the last remaining defendant in the corruption investigation (Qatarargate). Ms Kaili will be released on Friday or Monday at the latest, according to her lawyer, Sven Mary. The Belgian judiciary had already decided in recent days to place Marc Tarabella (S&D, Belgian) and former Italian MEP Antonio Panzeri, two other key suspects in the Qatargate case, under house arrest with electronic tag (see EUROPE 13159/16). Ms Kaili is suspected of having interceded for several years in the European Parliament’s decisions, in favour of foreign powers, including Qatar, in return for payments. “She has been proclaiming her innocence for four and a half months. We are not yet finished with this investigation”, said Sven Mary. (LC)
