22/03/23 (Agence Europe) – The NGO Amnesty International called on French lawmakers on Tuesday 21 March to reject plans to allow citizens to be monitored using artificial intelligence (AI) in 2024, the year Paris will host the Olympic Games. “These draconian mass surveillance technologies violate the right to privacy and can lead to violations of the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly”, commented Amnesty International. The NGO’s position comes as some 40 MEPs sent a letter to the French Parliament on Friday 17 March asking for the same thing (see EUROPE 13144/11). Furthermore, the NGO is concerned that the bill will “distort AI legislation” (see EUROPE 13129/15) and believes that the bill “should serve as a wake-up call for the EU”. (TM)
