22/03/23 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 22 March, the European External Action Service spokesperson emphasised the EU’s concern about the restrictions introduced by the new law on political parties in Azerbaijan. “It risks having a chilling effect on political pluralism and fundamental rights and freedoms, such as freedom of association, freedom of expression and freedom of peaceful assembly”, they said in a statement, recalling that these rights were essential to the functioning of a democratic society. “Vibrant, accountable and inclusive multiparty systems must be guaranteed”, they said. The spokesperson asked Baku to take into account the recommendations of the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe on the previous law on political parties and the recommendations of the Venice Commission and the OSCE/ODHIR of 13 March on this new law.
