AI Act, fourteen organisations from industry sector call on European Parliament not to deviate too far from Commission’s original proposal

Fourteen organisations from industry sector, including ACEA, EuroCommerce and the BSA-Software Alliance, have published a joint position paper in which they express concern about the possibility of “significantly” deviating from the initial proposal for future legislation on artificial intelligence (AI Act) (see EUROPE 13109/8).

The signatories of the document urge the European Parliament to “ensure that any possible new requirements and amendments to the Act are introduced taking into account their technical feasibility, impact on legal certainty, and the ability of AI developers, deployers, and users to comply with them”.

In addition, the sectoral organisations ask the MEPs in charge of the dossier to take into account several “key principles” when finalising the compromise text.

Thus, for the signatories of the paper, the emphasis should be on maintaining the “the risk-based approach of the original proposal while defining ‘high-risk’ in a way that reflects it”.

Responsibilities should be allocated “properly along the value chain” and a “a definition of AI that is recognised by industry, in line with OECD work, and does not include non-AI tools” should be used.

Finally, in addition to the importance of legal certainty and the fact that the AI Act does not “overlap” with other existing legislation, the paper stresses the importance of avoiding “uncertainty for further investment, trade and innovation”.
