07/03/23 (Agence Europe) – During the meeting of the Council of Education Ministers on Tuesday 7 March, the Council of the European Union adopted the transitional arrangements for medical devices (see EUROPE 13134/29). On 6 January, the European Commission had submitted a proposal for a regulation amending the one on medical devices and implantable medical devices (see EUROPE 13094/1) in order to avoid shortages of these devices in the EU during the transition to the new Regulations EU/2017/745 and EU/2017/746. On Thursday 16 February, the European Parliament voted, as part of an urgency procedure and without amendment, in favour of the amendment regulation (see EUROPE 13123/6). Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Stella Kyriakides welcomed the EU Council’s decision on 7 March, and said that the Commission and Member States would now work with the certified bodies on longer-term solutions.
