07/03/23 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission announced on Tuesday 7 March that it had approved the addition of ‘Cebolla de la Mancha’ onions from Spain to the EU register of protected geographical indications (PGIs). Produced in the Castilla-La Mancha region, the ‘Cebolla de La Mancha’ is based on the characteristics of the Reca type onion, and a quality conferred by the production area and cultivation practices. Castilla-La Mancha is the leading production region in Spain. It represents more than half of the national onion crop. The potassium, magnesium and calcium present in the region’s soils are responsible for the characteristic sweetness of this onion. This new name will be added to the list of 1,610 agricultural products already protected at EU level. (LC)
