07/03/23 (Agence Europe) – According to European Digital Rights (EDRi) and the German Pirate Party (Greens/EFA) MEPs, 80% of young people aged 13-17 in 13 EU Member States “would not feel comfortable being politically active or exploring their sexuality if authorities were able to monitor their digital communications for child sexual abuse”, according to a statement. The Council of the EU and the European Parliament are currently making progress on the Regulation on preventing child sexual abuse material (CSAM) online. Over 8,000 young people were consulted: 66% do not approve of ISPs monitoring their digital communications for suspicious content; 67% use encrypted applications such as WhatsApp or Signal and 56% consider their anonymity crucial to their activism.
