European Commission proposes an update of certain quotas for 2023

The European Commission adopted, on Tuesday 7 March, a proposal to amend the regulation on total allowable catches (TACs) and quotas for 2023 for certain stocks only.

Regulation 2023/194 sets a provisional TAC for anchovy caught in the Bay of Biscay by Spain and France for the period 1 January to 30 June 2023, pending publication of the scientific advice for this stock for 2023. The final TAC for this stock for 2023 is set at 33,000 tonnes.

The proposal also covers the 2023 fishing opportunities for sandeel in UK and EU waters (in the North Sea). Pending the outcome of the EU/UK bilateral consultations, the sandeel TAC is marked pm (pro memoria). The same applies to catches of northern shrimp and whiting in the Skagerrak and Kattegat and Greenland halibut and cod in the north-eastern Arctic, all of which are subject to bilateral EU/Norway consultations.

Bluefin tuna. Once the EU plan has been approved by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT), the Commission services will update this proposal with a non-paper proposing fishing effort limits and maximum farming capacities and inputs for 2023.
