07/03/23 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 7 March, the Council of the European Union adopted a €40 million assistance measure under the European Peace Facility (EPF) with the aim of strengthening the military capabilities of Niger’s armed forces in the face of “a mounting terrorist threat”. This measure was designed in conjunction with the new EU military partnership mission ‘EUMPM Niger’ in response to the tripartite approach - equipment, infrastructure and training - advocated by the Nigerien authorities, according to a statement from the EU institution (see EUROPE 13125/11). It will support the creation of a communications and command support battalion in Téra, in the Tillabéry region, through the provision of non-lethal equipment (ground vehicles, surveillance and communications equipment, infrastructure). In July, the EFF had already granted €20 million in aid to the Nigerien armed forces. (MB)
