Ahead of International Women’s Day on 8 March, the Council of the EU on Tuesday 7 March adopted sanctions against nine individuals and three entities responsible for sexual violence, rape and large-scale violation of women’s rights.
Sanctioned under the EU human rights sanctions regime (see EUROPE 12617/2), they will have their assets frozen in the EU and will no longer be able to receive funds, directly or indirectly, from any person or entity based in the Union. The listed individuals are also subject to a ban on entry into the EU.
“With today’s decision, we are enhancing efforts to counter sexual and gender-based violence, to ensure that those responsible are fully accountable for their actions, and to combat impunity”, said High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell.
The sanctions affect two Taliban ministers in Afghanistan, a commander and an officer of a police station in Moscow, two members of the Russian army, two commissioners from South Sudan and the Burmese Minister of Home Affairs. Sanctions on organisations include Iran’s Qarchak prison, the Syrian Republican Guard and the Office of the Chief of Military and Security Affairs in Burma.
