31/01/2023 (Agence Europe) – During the meeting of the Political and Security Committee on Tuesday 31 January, the Ambassadors of the EU Member States decided to appoint Dimitrios Karabalis as Head of the European Union Monitoring Mission in Georgia (EUMM Georgia) from 1 February 2023 to 14 December 2023. The current mandate of this unarmed civilian mission, which contributes to stabilisation, normalisation and confidence-building between the parties to the conflict between Russia and Georgia, will also run until 14 December 2023. Karabalis, who is currently director for Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, South Caucasus and Central Asia at the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, replaces Marek Szczygieł of Poland, who has been in office since 15 March 2020.
