31/01/2023 (Agence Europe) – In Botswana last Saturday (see EUROPE 13107/16), the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell met with Foreign Minister Lemogang Kwape to discuss “how the EU could support Botswana in terms of economic diversification, energy transition and digitalisation”, his office said on 31 January. As in South Africa (see EUROPE 13109/13), multilateralism, the war in Ukraine and its global implications were also discussed. Borrell met with Elias Mpedi Magosi, Executive Secretary of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), ahead of an EU/SADC ministerial meeting in 2023. The diamond industry is of considerable importance to the economy of Botswana, a country which will host the headquarters of the future secretariat of the Kimberley Process in Gaborone, for which Mr Borrell congratulated his interlocutors.
