24/01/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 24 January, the members of the European Parliament’s Environment Committee (ENVI) unanimously (74 votes for,0 against, 0 abstentions) confirmed the provisional Interinstitutional Agreement reached in December 2022 on the proposed regulation on batteries and battery waste (see EUROPE 13081/5). A core symbolic part of the circular economy, this future regulation aims to improve the sustainability of all batteries sold in the EU throughout their lifecycle and to develop a European battery industry that is conducive to the EU’s strategic autonomy. Requirements for carbon footprint, recycled content, performance and sustainability will be phased in from 2024. A more comprehensive regulatory framework on extended producer responsibility will start to apply in mid-2025, with higher collection targets introduced over time.
