24/01/23 (Agence Europe) – On Sunday 22 January, the European Commission opened a consultation period on the modernisation and rationalisation of the legal framework for European population statistics (see EUROPE 13104/11). Data is currently collected from the Member States separately, with different periodicity and legal bases. The proposal thus contains provisions to establish a harmonised definition of the population based on sound statistical concepts for all products and to facilitate access to available data sources. The future text should thus ensure that population statistics are published more quickly and that they remain “relevant, coherent and comparable in the light of demographic, migratory, social and economic developments in society”, says the Commission.
