MEPs endorse two European Parliament/EU Council provisional agreements on modernisation of justice

On Thursday 12 January, MEPs on the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) adopted two provisional agreements reached with the Czech Presidency of the EU Council in December on two texts of the ‘justice modernisation’ package. These are the regulation establishing a platform for collaboration on joint investigation teams (JITs) (see EUROPE 13083/19) and the regulation on the exchange of information in terrorist cases (see EUROPE 13085/16)

The first will allow for easier collaboration between members of a JIT , as well as participation in the online platform for international judicial authorities such as the International Criminal Court (ICC). It is, for example, part of the latest JIT established in March 2022 on war crimes in Ukraine, which now includes seven countries (see EUROPE 12920/3, 13042/8).

The second regulation also creates a kind of online management tool, but this time for EU judicial authorities to store and manage information on terrorism cases.

Both texts were subject to a quick agreement between the European Parliament and the Czech Presidency. They are likely to be put to the vote during the February plenary session in Strasbourg. (Original version in French by Léa Marchal)
