12/01/2023 (Agence Europe) – Tap water in the EU is set to benefit from improved quality and safety under the EU’s Directive on the quality of water intended for human consumption [(EU) 2020/2184], whose requirements for Member States to monitor emerging substances come into force on Thursday 12 January. This directive, which updates 1998 legislation, came into force in 2021. It sets updated safety standards, introduces a methodology for identifying and managing risks to quality throughout the water supply chain and establishes a monitoring list for emerging substances such as microplastics, endocrine disruptors, and new types of chemicals to be monitored. The European Commission adopted the first list of emerging substances to be monitored in January 2022 (see EUROPE 12872/9). (AN)
