EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT PLENARY / Chad

European Parliament condemns deadly violence against peaceful protesters in October

The European Parliament deplores the repression and deadly violence perpetrated in Chad against pro-democracy demonstrators during the October 2022 protests and reiterates its condemnation of the 20 April 2021 military coup in the country, in an emergency resolution adopted by a show of hands on Thursday 15 December.

In the resolution, MEPs condemn the restriction of the fundamental right to demonstrate and the use of violence against Chadian demonstrators and civil society.

According to the Parliament, the Chadian regime has failed to honour its commitment to a democratic transition, causing a protracted crisis in the country. The resolution stresses the need to organise new, transparent, inclusive and credible presidential elections as soon as possible.

MEPs call for the release of all protesters detained by the Chadian government and for them to be given legal protection. They condemn the prosecution of mass trials that have failed to meet international standards of transparency and justice.

The Parliament calls for an independent and impartial investigation by the United Nations and the African Union into the reported violence, including reports of torture in Chadian prisons.
