European Parliament condemns crackdown on protests in China in November

MEPs condemn the crackdown on peaceful protests in China during November. They adopted a resolution by a show of hands on Thursday 15 December expressing their solidarity with the Chinese people.

Unprecedented large-scale protests broke out in November over China’s ‘zero-Covid’ policy. The European Parliament claims that human rights violations have occurred as a result of this policy.

During his visit to Beijing, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, had discussed “society’s response” to the measures to contain Covid-19 with his counterpart Xi Jinping as well as the subject of human rights in the country (see EUROPE 13075/26).

MEPs also came back on the situation of Uyghurs in China after a fire killed ten of them on 24 November in Urumqi, Xinjiang. This incident “exacerbates the suffering of this ethnic group who are victims of systematic human rights atrocities in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region”, they said.

They “invite” the Chinese authorities “to put an end to the repression of Uyghurs“ and recall the numerous human rights violations against them. As for the EU’s response, it should impose more sanctions against Chinese officials and entities responsible for crimes against humanity, the European Parliament said in its resolution.
