07/12/2022 (Agence Europe) – Members of the World Trade Organization (WTO) have still not been able to agree on extending the agreement reached in June on intellectual property rights for Covid-19 vaccines (‘TRIPS waiver’) to treatments and diagnostic tools. They have only eleven days left before the 17 December deadline, but they seem to be moving towards a postponement of the decision, according to a source in Geneva. The United States proposed on Tuesday 6 December to extend the deadline in order to gather more information and to start its own investigation into the matter. China supports this proposal. Ambassador Lansana Gberie (Sierra Leone), who is chairing the discussions, plans to submit a report to the WTO General Council noting the lack of consensus and the need for further discussions. (LM)
