07/12/2022 (Agence Europe) – Raising the EU’s target for the share of renewable energy in the energy mix to 45% by 2030 would halve the EU’s gas imports, according to a report published by the Ember think-tank on Wednesday 7 December. This would limit gas imports to 118 billion cubic metres (bcm) in 2030 compared to 236 bcm projected in the provisions of the climate legislative package (‘Fit for 55 package’). Ember estimates that, based on current forecasts for TTF gas prices, this increase in ambition would also save around €200 billion in the period between 2025 and 2030. The report comes as the Czech Presidency of the EU Council proposed a 40% target for the 19 December meeting of EU energy ministers (see EUROPE 13076/2). The European Parliament and the Commission, on the other hand, advocate an increase to 45%. See the report: https://aeur.eu/f/4im (DG)
