07/12/2022 (Agence Europe) – The Council of the European Union updated, on Wednesday 7 December, the population figures of the Member States for the calculation of the qualified majority. Out of a total population of 447.5 million, the most populous countries are Germany (83.2 million inhabitants, 18.59% of the total), France (67.8 million, 15.16%), Italy (59.6 million, 13.32%) and Spain (47.4 million, 10.6%), while the least populous are Malta (520,971 inhabitants, 0.12%), Luxembourg (643,648, 0.14%) and Cyprus (904,700, 0.2%). A qualified majority is reached when at least 55% of the Member States (15 countries) representing at least 65% of the total population of the EU are present.
