European Commission adopts Horizon Europe’s main work programme for 2023-2024

On Tuesday 6 December, the European Commission adopted Horizon Europe’s main work programme for the period 2023-2024.

This programme has a budget of €13.5 billion to support research into innovative solutions to Europe’s environmental, energy, digital and geopolitical challenges.

Of this amount, €5.67 billion will be mobilised to support innovative climate research, €1.67 billion will be used for research and innovation to protect biodiversity, €4.5 billion is allocated for research regarding the digital transition, €970 million is for research into low-carbon energy solutions and the quest for EU energy autonomy in line with RePowerEU, and more than €600 million of investment is announced for the five new EU missions in 2023.

Targeted support for Ukraine and support for international initiatives are also provided for.

Furthermore, for 2023, this work programme is expected to direct more than €1 billion of NextGenerationEU investments for economic recovery in the EU after the acute phase of the Covid-19 pandemic and €336 million will be dedicated to research and innovation in the EU.

The first calls for participation under this new main work programme will be launched on 7 December.
