MEPs strengthen Eurojust’s role in cross-border terrorism investigations

MEPs on the European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties approved, on Tuesday 25 October, new rules for sharing information across borders to combat and investigate terrorism.

The new legislation will make it “easier for Eurojust to find links between parallel investigations in different countries, by giving it timely access to data and the possibility to cross-reference them” the European Parliament said in a statement. The report by Patryk Jaki (ECR, Polish) was adopted with 52 votes in favour, 1 against and 3 abstentions.

Under the current rules, Eurojust receives information from EU countries on terrorist offences that concern more than one country. The new proposal would strengthen the requirements for Member States to share this information with Eurojust “and allow the Agency to store, share and cross-check new types of data, including biometric data, on current and past investigations in order to establish links between them”.

In addition, Eurojust “could support investigations involving a Member State and a third country, or a Member State and an international organisation, such as the International Criminal Court (ICC)”.

MEPs also want to authorise the exchange of information at an early stage of investigations and to extend the periods of data retention in the European Judicial Counter-Terrorism Register.
