On Tuesday 25 October, the European Parliament’s Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON) approved by a large majority (42 votes in favour, 5 against, 5 abstentions) the nomination of Frenchman Dominique Laboureix as chair of the Single Resolution Board (SRB), the European authority in charge of resolving failing banking groups within the eurozone banking union.
Mr Laboureix was previously a member of the SRB’s Board of Directors before taking up the position of Secretary General of the French Prudential Supervision and Resolution Authority (ACPR) in 2019. His five-year term will begin at the end of Elke König’s, who will step down on 22 December after eight years at the helm of the EU authority.
On Tuesday, MEPs also approved by a large majority (43 votes in favour, 4 against and 5 abstentions) the appointment of Finnish Tuija Taos to the SRB Council’s Management Board. She will replace Slovenian Boštjan Jazbec, whose five-year term ends in March 2023.
Mr Laboureix and Ms Taos were selected through procedures led by the European Commission. They were the only candidates heard the previous day by the ECON Commission. After a vote at the European Parliament mini-plenary session on 9-10 November, the Council of the European Union will approve both nominations at a subsequent ministerial meeting.
