19/10/2022 (Agence Europe) – The European Environmental Bureau (EEB), a large network of NGOs, condemned on Tuesday 18 October the postponement of the revision of the REACH regulation (EC No 1907/200) in the European Commission’s work programme to the third quarter of 2023, denouncing “a screeching U-turn away from excellent plans for greater environmental and health protections and towards the interests of industrial polluters”. As the centrepiece for a generic approach of the risks of the most toxic groups of chemicals, this targeted revision of the regulation was originally planned for late 2022 or early 2023 (see EUROPE 12953/11). “With European Parliament elections in 2024, the delay is effectively ‘game over’ for the much-needed improvements of chemicals regulation under this Commission. No complex reform has ever been completed in such a short period of time”, says EEB. (AN)
