EU signs ‘green partnership’ with Morocco ahead of COP27

The Executive Vice-President of the European Commission in charge of the ‘Green Deal’, Frans Timmermans, and the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, on Tuesday 18 October signed a “green partnership” aimed at consolidating cooperation between the European Union and Morocco in the fight against climate change, energy transition, environmental protection, preservation of biodiversity and promotion of the green and blue economy.

The first initiative of its kind signed with a partner country, this partnership also allows both parties to send a political signal of common ambition ahead of the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) to be held in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt, from 6 to 18 November.

The Green Partnership we have concluded today builds on our shared commitment to take action against climate change and to seize the economic opportunities inherent in the green transition”, said Mr Timmermans, who is visiting Rabat.

He praised Morocco’s “leadership role” in the fields of climate adaptation and energy transition as well as its “limitless” potential in renewable energy.

According to him, this partnership could contribute to the creation of new industrial value chains, particularly in the field of hydrogen. (Original version in French by Damien Genicot)
