European Parliament/EU Council agreement on reform of European standardisation organisations

It took only one negotiation session for the representatives of the European Parliament and the Czech Presidency of the Council of the European Union to reach a political agreement on Wednesday 12 October on the reform of the European standardisation organisations (CEN, CENELEC and ETSI) (see EUROPE 13036/21).

The European Parliament, Commission and EU Council agreed that standard setting must remain a process that involves a broad cross-section of stakeholders. We will continue to make sure that the public interest and European values are not undermined in this process, and this commitment is reflected in the final text”, said Svenja Hahn (Renew Europe, German) in a statement.

The Interinstitutional Agreement endorses the European Commission’s proposal to ensure that mandates given by the Commission to the European standardisation organisations are handled exclusively by the national standards bodies of the EU Member States or the European Economic Area (see EUROPE 12882/3).

MEPs have also ensured that the representation of stakeholders, such as SMEs and civil society organisations, is strengthened.

According to the Council of the EU, future European legislation will also ensure that European values are respected in the process of developing European standards, especially in the digital sector. (Original version in French by Mathieu Bion)
