European Commission appoints four new Deputy Directors-General

The European Commission decided on Wednesday 12 October to appoint four new senior officials to the posts of Deputy Directors-General in four Directorates-General (DG).

Magda Kopczynska from Poland will take up the post of Deputy Director-General in the DG for Agriculture and Rural Development (DG AGRI). Magda Kopczynska is currently Director for ‘Waterborne Transport’ in DG Mobility and Transport (DG MOVE).

Renate Nikolay from Germany will take up the post of Deputy Director-General in the Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG CNECT). Since 2014, Renate Nikolay has been the Head of Cabinet of Vice-President Vera Jourova, in charge of Values and Transparency. Ms Nikolay was also a Member of Cabinet of Trade Commissioners Peter Mandelson and Catherine Ashton.

In addition, Nils Behrndt, a German national, is appointed Deputy Director-General in the Directorate-General for Justice and Consumers (DG JUST). He is currently Acting Deputy Director-General in DG JUST and is in charge of several proposals concerning the digitalisation of justice and consumer policy. He was previously Head of Cabinet of Commissioner Neven Mimica, in charge of International Cooperation and Development.

Finally, the European Commission decided to appoint Italian Leopoldo Rubinacci as Deputy Director-General of the Directorate-General for Trade (DG TRADE). Leopoldo Rubinacci is currently Director for ‘Resources, Interinstitutional Relations, Communication and Civil Society’ in DG TRADE, after having previously been Director for ‘Trade Defence’.
