Spanish MEP José Ramón Bauzá Díaz (Renew Europe) briefed members of the European Parliament Transport Committee on Monday 10 October on behalf of rapporteur Søren Gade (Renew Europe, Danish) on the state of play of the inter-institutional negotiations (‘trilogues’) on sustainable fuels in aviation (‘ReFuelEU Aviation’) (see EUROPE 13017/10).
Only one trilogue has taken place so far on the subject and positions are “very far apart at the moment”, said Bauzá Díaz. “The EU Council wants to negotiate without a very strong mandate, which makes it difficult to compromise. He does not like many of our proposals and vice versa”, he added.
In detail, the Parliament’s position is based on three major axes: the Parliament wants to keep a high level of ambition, to achieve “forward-looking legislation” and to “avoid fragmentation of the internal market”.
Future discussions should include the definition of sustainable fuels and ensuring that the sector can adapt to the environmental and digital transition.
Other issues are expected to be on the agenda for the upcoming negotiations. “The discussions at technical level add additional issues to be analysed, such as competent authorities, or reporting”, said Ciarán Cuffe (Greens/EFA, Irish).
The next trilogue will take place on Thursday 13 October. (Original version in French by Thomas Mangin)
