On Monday 10 October, the Commission launched a new online job search tool to help people fleeing the Russian invasion of Ukraine find work in the EU.
Specifically, the Commissioners for Home Affairs and Social Affairs, Ylva Johansson and Nicolas Schmit, have launched a pilot project known as the EU ‘talent pool’, in which five Member States are participating, “including Poland”, according to Commissioner Schmit.
It will allow these temporarily protected persons to upload their CVs so that their profile can be accessed by over 4,000 employers, national public employment services and private employment agencies.
The Commissioner encouraged European employers to make use of the portal, implemented by the EURES portal, and to offer “quality” job offers, as the EU is keen to prevent the millions of registered Ukrainians from “being exploited” and deprived of their social rights.
The two Commissioners also stressed the importance of ensuring that Ukrainian refugees are “quickly and effectively integrated into the labour market for both host communities and people fleeing war, who want to rebuild their lives”.
According to Commissioner Schmit, the employment rate of Ukrainians registered under temporary protection is “slightly increasing” with, to date, 370,000 people registered as “employed” in 15 Member States, according to partial data.
And 250,000 Ukrainians are reportedly registered as jobseekers in 18 member countries.
For her part, Commissioner Johansson recalled that the temporary protection currently enjoyed by 4.2 million Ukrainians is to last “until March 2024” (the interior ministers had decided in March to activate this 2001 ‘temporary protection’ directive for a renewable period of one year). Member States that do not currently provide for this 2-year period in their legislation must “review” their legislation, the Commissioner added.
