03/10/2022 (Agence Europe) – On Sunday 2 October, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, deplored the “disproportionate and unjustified” decision of the Ortega regime to expel the EU ambassador to Nicaragua, Bettina Muscheidt. This decision, together with the decision to break off diplomatic relations with the Netherlands, will lead to the “further isolation” of the Central American country, he said, arguing that the EU will respond “ firmly”. Twenty-one Nicaraguan officials and dignitaries are subject to EU sanctions, but not its President, Daniel Ortega (see EUROPE 12865/2). The European Parliament calls for more EU sanctions against the Nicaraguan authorities (see EUROPE 12969/20). (MB)
