08/07/2022 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 8 July, theAssociation of Commercial Television in Europe (ACT) called on European decision-makers to reject calls for direct network fees or contributions to be paid to telecoms infrastructure companies. Furthermore, the ACT calls for “all implications” to be considered before taking measures that would have a “direct or indirect impact on the stability and sustainability” of the European audiovisual industry. The ACT also believes that European broadcasters are “already subject to extensive investment and levy obligations to support culture”, and points out that these obligations do not apply to video sharing platforms and social networks, “which benefit from significant regulatory asymmetries”. “The creation of a network tax risks undermining the net neutrality that has helped protect media plurality since the birth of the Internet”, concludes the ACT.
