08/07/22 (Agence Europe) – MEPs “strongly condemn the savage killing” of environmental and human rights activists and members of indigenous communities in Brazil, including the most recent killings of British journalist Dom Phillips and Brazilian activist Bruno Pereira. The urgent resolution they adopted on 7 July in Strasbourg (362 votes in favour, 16 against and 200 abstentions) calls on the Brazilian authorities to “conduct a full, impartial and independent investigation” into the killings. Parliament “demands that the Brazilian authorities take immediate action to prevent human rights violations”and criticises the “aggressive language” of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and the increasing rates of deforestation on indigenous peoples’ lands. The resolution was requested by the Greens/EFA group, whose delegation will travel to Brazil next week. See the resolution: https://aeur.eu/f/2kc (AN)
