The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, is asking the Czech Presidency of the Council of the European Union to invite the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, to put the European Parliament’s request for a revision of the EU treaties under Article 48 on the agenda of the next EU summit, in a letter to the Czech Prime Minister, Petr Fiala, on Thursday 30 June.
“We urgently need to reform the Union to make it more efficient and democratic. Moreover, the outlook of a further enlargement necessitates that the Institutions and the decision-making processes are future-proof and equipped to absorb our European friends into the Union”, Ms Metsola said, citing the principle of sincere cooperation between EU institutions in the letter, of which EUROPE has a copy.
The Parliament did not appreciate the fact that the General Affairs Council (see EUROPE 12976/21), and then the European Council (see EUROPE 12979/5), had not given a view on the advisability of an interinstitutional reform of the Union. (Original version in French by Mathieu Bion)
