01/07/2022 (Agence Europe) – The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has seen signs of a new widespread epidemic wave of SARS-CoV-2, fuelled by the BA.4 and BA.5 variants. In its weekly epidemiological bulletin on Covid-19 dated Thursday 30 June, the ECDC reports a recent increase in Covid-19 cases among people aged 65 and over in 21 of the 26 countries who are reporting these data. This is equivalent to an increase of 27% in the European Union and the European Economic Area. The increased rate of transmission in this age group is starting to be reflected in cases of severe disease. Only 63.6% of the adult population aged 18 years and over and 52.7% of the total population have completed both a full vaccination schedule and a first dose of booster vaccination.
