On Friday 24 June the European Council briefly addressed the proposals from the Conference on the Future of Europe, calling for “effective follow-up” to these proposals by the EU’s institutional trio.
It wants citizens to be properly informed about the decisions that each EU institution will take within its sphere of competence.
“We have had initial discussions and we will continue them in the European Council”, said French President Emmanuel Macron soberly.
To the dismay of several MEPs, he did not take a position on the European Parliament’s request to convene a Convention to reform the functioning of the EU.
For German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the EU has “institutional reforms ahead of it which are urgent anyway and which become even more important, especially if we consider that there will be other members”.
