24/06/2022 (Agence Europe) – French President Emmanuel Macron said he had held discussions with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on the Hungarian veto on the proposed directive transposing the OECD agreement on minimum taxation of multinationals (pillar II) (see EUROPE 12974/8). He promised to “do our utmost to unblock this veto”. But, quoting the Stoics, he felt that “for anything that does not depend on oneself, one can be reasonably committed, but no more”. Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel, for his part, warned against the end of unanimity in EU Council decisions. Such a situation would, in his view, entail the risk of being outvoted on certain issues that are essential for Luxembourg. (MB)
