Joint Research Centre report examines link between artificial intelligence and children’s rights

On Wednesday 22 June the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre published a report on artificial intelligence and children’s rights.

The JRC believes that artificial intelligence can provide opportunities for children. However, if services and products related to artificial intelligence are poorly developed or implemented, artificial intelligence may jeopardise some of the rights of children, such as the right to privacy, education or protection.

The JRC has identified several elements to be taken into account when developing artificial intelligence for reliable artificial intelligence: the absence of discriminatory algorithms, the possibility for children and their carers to control the use of their data.

The JRC recommends the use of language that is transparent and understandable to children.

The report also proposes that services and products for children should be known in a sustainable way.

Finally, the report proposes to make designers, operators of artificial intelligence and those who market artificial intelligence products and services accountable for the products they develop.

The Centre stresses the importance of including parents and children in decision-making on artificial intelligence. Two workshops with young people were held during the report design process.
