29/06/2022 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 29 June, the European Commission announced that it had authorised the bringing to market of a genetically modified maize for food and feed use. This is hybrid maize DP4114 x MON 810 x MIR604 x NK603 from the Pioneer Overseas Corporation, which had received a favourable opinion from EFSA. EU Member States were unable to achieve the qualified majority required to approve or reject the authorisation, which in EU law is equivalent to a ‘lack of opinion’. On 23 June, the European Parliament opposed the Commission’s implementing decision, as it has done each time, on grounds of public health and environmental protection, specifically citing shortcomings in the risk assessment (see EUROPE 12978/13). As the Parliament’s objection was not legally binding, the European Commission decided to go ahead. See the objection: https://aeur.eu/f/2ej (AN)
