EU and Norway announce strengthening energy cooperation

The European Commission’s Executive Vice-President for the Green Deal, Frans Timmermans, Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson and Norwegian Minister of Petroleum and Energy Terje Aasland agreed on Thursday 23 June to strengthen cooperation between the European Union and Norway in the field of energy.

The two parties intend to secure additional short- and long-term supplies of Norwegian gas to the EU to cope with high energy prices.

Given the high production levels seen in Norway in the first months of the year (...), there is strong potential for increased sales to Europe in 2022, bringing close to 100 TWh of extra energy to the European market”, the joint statement said.

They also want to develop long-term cooperation in the field of offshore renewable energy, hydrogen, carbon capture and storage, and energy research and development.
