25/05/2022 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 24 May, the Europêche organisation welcomed the decisions taken by the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) providing for a “management procedure for bigeye tuna that will allow for the first time to set a total allowable catch (TAC) in 2024”. This proposal from Australia was co-sponsored by the EU and other countries. “The adoption of catch limits for bigeye tuna marks a new milestone in the history of IOTC”, according to Europêche. The organisation highlights the failure of the yellowfin tuna negotiations because of the position of a group of countries (Oman, India, Indonesia, Iran, Madagascar and Somalia) that “still refuse to apply the reductions imposed by the management plan of 2021”. No consensus was reached on skipjack tuna (see EUROPE 12959/18) either. (LC)
