Persistent organic pollutants, European Commission consults public on PFOA

18/05/2022 (Agence Europe)On Tuesday 17 May, the European Commission launched a public consultation, which will run until 14 June, on a draft delegated act to protect human health and the environment from perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), its salts, and PFOA-related compounds. This chemical is a persistent organic pollutant (POP) found in many products such as textiles and fire-fighting foams. The draft delegated act modifies the concentration of PFOA as an unintentional trace contaminant (UTC) in substances, mixtures and articles and removes an exemption. The adoption of the delegated act is expected in the fourth quarter. Annex I of Regulation (EU) 2019/1021 on POPs includes a UTC limit value for PFOA of 1 mg/kg in PTFE micropowders, to be reviewed by 5 July 2022.
