On Wednesday 18 May, the NGO Compassion in World Farming urged EU agriculture ministers to speed up the implementation of the ‘Farm to Fork’ strategy and to “fend off attempts by the industrial agriculture lobby to use the Ukraine war to undermine” this strategy presented by the European Commission.
In a letter to EU agriculture ministers, the NGO calls for the ‘Farm to Fork’ strategy to be put on the agenda of the AGRIFISH Council meeting on 13 June, to give ministers an opportunity to “acknowledge that Europe’s food system needs to be changed now to help combat the climate crisis”.
According to Olga Kikou, head of Compassion in World Farming EU, “significantly reducing production of meat and dairy” will help to meet climate targets.
The NGO criticises the call to increase European animal feed production, as it “would involve sacrificing areas reserved for protecting biodiversity”. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
