18/05/2022 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 17 May, the EU High Representative, Josep Borrell, welcomed the holding of parliamentary elections in Lebanon on 15 May and called for the rapid formation of a government. “We expect the newly elected Parliament to support the process of a swift formation of a government, assume its responsibility to work together to serve the interest of Lebanon and its people by adopting all legislation and implementing reforms necessary to improve governance and stabilise the economy”, the High Representative warned in a statement. Hezbollah and its allies have lost their majority in parliament, which is now home to independent MPs from the protest movement that began in October 2019. While welcoming the participation of the Lebanese people in the elections, Mr Borrell regretted that the electoral system, irregularities and vote buying had led to a lack of level playing field. (CG)
