18/05/2022 (Agence Europe) – In a letter published on Wednesday 18 May, the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights calls on the British Home Secretary, Priti Patel, not to extradite Julian Assange. Dunja Mijatović stresses that this extradition would have “wider human rights implications”, which “have not yet been adequately considered in the proceedings”, including “the protection of those that publish classified information in the public interest”, which may reveal human rights violations. This could limit the exercise of media freedom and “ultimately hamper the press in performing its task as purveyor of information and public watchdog in democratic societies”.
