16/02/2022 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 16 February, the NGO T&E published a study in which it estimates that 23% of European maritime transport will be powered by fossil gas by 2030. “We cannot afford to switch from one fossil fuel to another. That will not get us to zero emissions by 2050”, said T&E’s head of sustainable shipping, Delphine Gozillon. The NGO points out that liquefied natural gas (LNG) ships currently account for 6% of the global fleet, but that the European Commission’s proposal on sustainable fuels for the maritime sector (‘FuelEU Maritime’) (see EUROPE 12882/5) could push some shipowners to switch to LNG. “European policymakers should introduce specific quotas and incentives to stimulate demand for hydrogen fuels”, Ms Gozillon concluded.
