On Tuesday 15 February, the European Commission opened a four-week public consultation period on the update of the European list of ship recycling facilities in the EU.
The forthcoming update of the Ship Recycling Regulation (1257/2013) will be the ninth version of the list of facilities and infrastructures where owners of ships flying the flag of one of the EU Member States are required to have their ships dismantled at the end of their operational period.
The next version of the list is expected to include two new facilities in the Netherlands and Scotland. The registration expiry date of a facility located in Bordeaux, France, will be updated. Another facility, located in Portugal, will be removed from the list, as it “does not meet the stated requirements”.
The updated list should include some 45 recognised ship dismantling facilities, 10 of which are located in third countries (Turkey and the UK).
