Green/EFA group in European Parliament proposes new regulation to control arms exports

The Greens/EFA group in the European Parliament, and in particular MEPs Hannah Neumann (Germany) and Alviina Alametsä (Finland), proposed, on Tuesday 12 October, a new regulation for the EU to further regulate arms exports.

For them, it is necessary to ensure that arms produced in the EU do not fuel armed conflicts and human rights violations.

We need common standard and risk assessment. We suggest to move the issue of arms exports to the common commercial policy”, said Hannah Neumann in an online event on Tuesday 12 October.

The Greens/EFA propose the creation of a risk assessment body composed of independent experts. The latter would establish a list of recipient countries and a risk assessment for each of them.

According to the report, Member States would still be responsible for authorising exports. However, they should consult the risk assessment.

If Member States fail to comply with the recommendations made by the risk assessment body, they should justify their choice to the European Parliament and to the European Commission.
